What is hypogonadism?

Hypogonadism is a condition in which the testes fail to produce adequate levels of testosterone, the primary male sex hormone. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests showing testosterone levels below normal range, often coupled with clinical symptoms.

Hypogonadism occurs when the testes do not produce sufficient testosterone, the hormone responsible for secondary sexual characteristics, muscle development, bone density, and sexual function. The condition can stem from problems in the testes themselves (primary hypogonadism) or from disruption in the signaling pathway from the brain's pituitary and hypothalamic glands (secondary hypogonadism).

Medical diagnosis of hypogonadism requires a blood test showing serum testosterone below the normal range (typically under 300 ng/dL, though reference ranges vary by laboratory). A single low reading may not be sufficient; doctors often order repeat tests and measure other hormones like luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone to identify the underlying cause. Symptoms that prompt testing include erectile dysfunction, reduced libido, fatigue, mood changes, and loss of muscle mass.

Hypogonadism forms the clinical basis for testosterone replacement therapy prescriptions in Florida and across the United States. Providers diagnose the condition through laboratory confirmation before recommending treatment, making accurate testing and interpretation essential. Men's health clinics in Florida typically evaluate patients with suspected hypogonadism using standardized protocols to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other contributing factors.
