What is a controlled substance schedule III?

Schedule III is a federal classification for substances with moderate abuse potential and accepted medical use, including testosterone, that requires a written or verbal prescription with refill limits and specific dispensing rules.

The Controlled Substances Act places regulated drugs into five schedules based on abuse potential and medical utility. Testosterone and related anabolic steroids fall under Schedule III, meaning the federal government recognizes legitimate medical uses while imposing stricter controls than non-controlled medications.

For prescribers and patients in Florida, Schedule III classification creates several practical requirements. A physician must issue a new prescription (not electronic) or provide a verbal authorization that a pharmacist documents. Prescriptions cannot be refilled more than five times within six months from issue, so patients often need regular follow-up visits to continue therapy. Telehealth providers can legally prescribe Schedule III testosterone, though they must comply with federal telemedicine rules, state medical board regulations, and DEA guidelines requiring proper patient evaluation.

Pharmacies must track Schedule III inventory, and dispensing records are maintained by state pharmacy boards. The classification reflects that while testosterone has recognized medical purposes in treating hypogonadism and related conditions, it also carries abuse and diversion risks. This is why legitimate telehealth and in-person TRT providers require documented patient history, baseline lab work, and ongoing monitoring rather than offering prescriptions without evaluation.
